AOL has different pricing plans, and one that appears to be
gaining in popularity is the BYOA (Bring Your Own Access) Plan. With this plan, which is
$14.95 a month, the user has unlimited access to thousands of AOL features, including
access to the Internet. This plan is ideal for people who already have an Internet
connection, or they have access from their school or place of work.
To take advantage of this plan, you need to do two things: First,
you need to change your billing plan to BYOA, and then you have to set up your account to
connect to AOL using TCP/IP.
Here are the steps you need to follow to do both:
To Change Your Pricing Plan:
Note: You have to sign on with your Master Screen Name to change your price plan.
- Go to Keyword: Billing.
- Under Update Your Info, click on Change Billing Method
or Price Plan.
- Select a pricing plan (in this case, BYOA).
To Set Up Your Account to Connect to AOL Using TCP/IP:
- Connect to your ISP, Cable Modem Service Provider, or other
Internet provider.
- Start America Online.
- On the Sign On screen, click on Setup.
- On the Setup screen, select Create a location for use with new
access phone numbers or an ISP. Click Next.
- In the Add Location window, type a name for the location
(for example, TCP/IP).
- Click on Add a custom connection (for example TCP/IP).
Click Next.
- A TCP/IP location will be created automatically.
- On the AOL Sign On window, select TCP/IP (or whatever you
decided to name it) from the Select Location drop-down menu.
- Click Sign On, and you will be connected to AOL using your
ISP/Cable Internet connection.
- Please note that we are not associated with America Online. You
must have an existing account with America Online to access their services. After you
establish an account with us for online access, you should contact America Online and
notify them that your accessing their service through a local Internet Provider (ISP
Access) so they (America Online) will reduce your monthly access charges to approx. $9.95
a month.
